Hi folks,
I am returning to you to ask for help. I have a series of new topics that I am writing about and am looking for some input on what you, as readers would like ot read first:
1) HM’s Head (with apologies to Herman’s Head)
This is my interpretation of what goes on in the mind of a recruiter (and for that matter, a hiring manager) when they are looking to hire someone. I will review what criteria is potentially examined, how that criteria is prioritized and what this means to you as a candidate.
2) So You Want To Be A Lawyer?
Again, this is my tongue-in-cheek review of what requirements there are to become an attorney, including educational, work requirements, and projected career path. I am looking for insight from actual attorneys on how demanding it can be and how they have learned to cope with the stingent standards for practicing the law.
3) I Know I’m Good, But How Do I Prove It?
This refers to the tendency among candidates that I meet with that seem to understand their inherent value to previous roles and positions they have held, but struggle with articulating what that value means in the real-world. Most of us are willing to tell anyone that asks that we are great employees worth hiring, but need a little help demonstrating why.
4) Why Can’t I Get Past The First Round? Why Can’t I Break Through?
This is probably one of the tougher posts that I will be working on, mainly because I struggle with this myself. I think for the most part, I will not be trying to provide specific advice here, as I will be offering some observations from myself, and other cited sources. What I want to do is to try to help others through guided observation, careful study of the pain points of the hiring company, and some self-realization and actualization.
With each of these, I am looking for input and ideas form others. I welcome strong, healthy debate on my opinions and perspectives, and I am not afraid of others voicing their criticisms as long as it serves a constructive purpose. Don’t just tell me it sucks, but let me know why and offer some solutions, and maybe we can work at putting some content out that others will find useful.
Thanks,
– Steve
