That’s right, I said it. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am that as a society we can be so sensitive when it comes to such a simple greeting.
I KNOW – Not everyone celebrates it.
I KNOW – Christmas can mean very negative things for some of us.
I KNOW – Christmas time seems sometimes lost in the mad dash for rampant consumerism, and the acquisition of stuff.
I DON”T CARE! It means something else to me. It means:
- Memories of my grandmother stressing out each year to cook for forty people.
- Dragging a freshly slaughtered Pine tree up three flights of stairs to an apartment, just so I can smell the crisp scent as it gives it’s life for our enjoyment.
- Loads and loads of food, that we all love eating, despite the guilt that comes with the calories.
- Watching “A Christmas Story,” “A Christmas Carol,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and the Rose Parade until I get sick, fall asleep, or someone changes the channel out of desperation.
- Drinking more egg nog (or nowadays, soy nog) until, it’s either gone or I can’t drink anymore.
- Lighting up the faces of others as they get their heart’s desire.
- Wishing others well, even if they might not wish you the same.
- Crumpled gift wrap in an overstuffed garbage bag, headed to the recycle bin.
- Candies, sweets, and heavenly treats.
- Bright dreams and wishes for a good new year.
I can say Season’s Greetings, or Happy Hollidays, or Glad Tidings, but who am I kidding? I like the sound of Christmas. I think I’ll stick with that.
