Well, here we go again. I’m looking for a new role. Was notified by my current company that my role is no longer needed. Go figure. That stings. Well, I guess it’s better than hearing that you are no longer useful. I mean, that could have been the news, but it wasn’t, right? So where do we go from here?
Option 1: (Veg Out)
I could sit and sulk and not do anything for a few months. Sit on my derrier and wait for my notice period to elapse. Receive the severance package and sit on my rear end some more and think about things. Yeah, that sounds lovely, but that’s not me.
Option 2: (Apply, Apply, Apply)
To be honest, I am doing just that, which is to find, research and apply to any and all jobs posted that seem remotely interesting. It is a solitary and bleak existence. I am not a fan, but at least doing so feels like I am doing something. All in all, I am at or north of 350 apps over the course of what is now at least 2 mos. (not as if anyone cares or is counting)
Option 3: (Network, Connect, and Commisurate)
The truth is, I am doing this as well. On advice of my job coach, I have been reaching out to colleagues, friends and others to help me decompress a little, put feelers out, as well as just connect and re-establish those ties that seemed to have withered over time. It is a process, and I am learning to use those muscles again.
Option 4: (Travel the world and write a book)
Sure, and who would buy musings of an old fart like me? I mean what could I have to say that would be so interesting. I confess, I will do some minor traveling soon, but nothing ground breaking. We are off for some SoCal fun for a convention coming up. Maybe some additional theme park travel at some point. Who knows.
Option 5: (Interview and Land a Job)
Honestly, I am also in the midst of this, but it has not been easy. Lots of startups. A few established players here and there. Mostly first round screens, with little to show for it. We’ll see where we are after some more convos. I am not supremely confident, but we’ll see where we are in the next week or so.
